August 11, 2005

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Georgia State University Debate Team and the GSU Department of Communication I'm pleased to invite you and your debate students to attend a one-day Debate Workshop to be held on Saturday, August 20, 2005. The event will be hosted on the Georgia State University campus, starting that morning in the General Classroom Building at the intersection of Central and Decatur (see the directions below). Please note that this year we are asking you to let us know the number of students you are bringing. Details are in the "registration and fees" section that follows this letter.

If you are receiving this e-mail in error, we apologize. Please feel free to forward it to anyone you think might find it useful.

The 2005 One-Day Workshop will feature lectures from national college coaches. Debaters from Georgia State's debate team and Emory's Barkley Forum will offer moderated exhibition debates for all attendees, and the schedule is designed to help all participants get the most out of their experience. Beginners and Advanced students will be separately introduced to the topic and prepared for separate exhibition debates, allowing each group to proceed at its own pace.

The workshop, as it has for many years, will feature a range of activities helpful for your students, regardless of their experience level. In addition to the preparatory lectures and the exhibition debates, we will have substantial afternoon breakout sessions for Beginners, Advanced debaters, judges, and coaches. All schools will receive a CD-ROM with evidence updates from the last two months prepared by the GSU coaching staff, and beginners will receive a copy of the novice-oriented Policy Debate Manual Dr. Bellon prepares each year for use at the Emory National Debate Institute.

I hope you'll be able to join us for this event. We are committed to making this experience beneficial for you and your students - and I'm personally eager to host you! Please feel free to forward this to other colleagues who would not be reached by a mailing list of active Georgia programs. I hope your summer has been wonderful.

Sincerely,

Dr. Joe Bellon

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

****Fees and Registration
This year, we are asking you to pre-register by e-mailing us the number of students you are planning to bring and whether these students are Beginners or Advanced (to us, Beginners are students who need very basic information about debate, while Advanced students already understand the debate process). This is important because we can't accurately predict how many evidence packets we should make if we don't know how many students will attend. This information should be sent to the special email address we have set up specifically for the Workshop: gsudebate at mindspring.com. The fee for this year's One-Day is $20 for each student. Coaches (and parents or other interested adults) attend for free, and we encourage them to accompany their students. CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE PAYABLE TO "NATIONAL DEBATE PROJECT".

****Directions
FROM THE NORTH: Take I-75/I-85 Southbound. Get off at Exit #249A (Courtland Street). This is a one-way street that will take you directly toward campus. Proceed on Courtland until you reach Edgewood Avenue (a stoplight just as Courtland takes a sharp turn to the right). Turn right on Edgewood. Very soon, you will reach Park Place. Turn left at the stoplight for Park Place, then go one block and take a left at the stoplight for Decatur Street. Go 1/2 block and park in the lot on your right.
FROM THE SOUTH. Take I-75/I-85 Northbound. Get off at exit #246 (Central Avenue/Fulton Street). Follow the signs to Central Avenue. Take a left at the light for Decatur Street. Go 1/2 block and park in the lot on your left.
FROM MARTA: Take MARTA to the 5 points station. Exit onto Marietta/Decatur Street. Head downhill toward Peachtree. Cross Peachtree and keep going downhill another 2 blocks. You will see the General Classroom Building at the corner of Decatur and Central.

****Lunch
The Georgia State University campus is located one short block away from Underground Atlanta, which contains a large food court and several inexpensive restaurants. One block in the other direction takes you to the 5-Points MARTA area, which also houses several inexpensive restaurants. You might want to take your students on the tour offered by the World of Coca-Cola, in the Underground complex. Or you might want to tour the Martin Luther King Center or Jimmy Carter Presidential Center -- both are within five minutes of the campus.
