MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL
Proudly Announces the 7th Annual:
HILLTOPPER CLASSIC
SEPTEMBER 23-24, 2005

The Marquette University High School Debate Team is once again proud to
host a quality debate tournament, boasting excellent competition from
across Wisconsin and the Midwest.

Overall, we look forward to hosting you and your students, and hope to
provide a few enjoyable days of debate competition.

Registration: Please register early. All entries will be accepted on a
first come, first served basis. We have a limited amount of space and
we expect to fill up early. Register by emailing entries to
marquettedebate at gmail.com. Registration forms are due no later than 3
p.m.
Monday, September 19, 2005. Of course, our disclaimer already says send
them in as soon as possible. Confirmation emails will be sent out to
confirm that teams are completely registered.

Format: We are pleased to offer the following divisions of competition.

Varsity 2-Person: The varsity two-person division will offer 6
preliminary rounds on Friday and Saturday and will break to octofinals
or quarter-finals as the division size merits. Time limits will be
8-3-5 with 8 minutes prep per side. The first 2 preliminary rounds will
be random paired. All other rounds will be paired high/low within
brackets with the even rounds featuring side constraints. Awards will
be presented to elimination round participants and the top five
speakers. (Entry limit: 4 teams per school)

In the Varisity 2-person division we will use a form of the mutually
preferred judging system that has been used at the WDCA TOC and other
tournaments. In order for this system to work properly all persons who
are expected to judge at the Hilltopper Classic must be identified no
later than 3 p.m. Tuesday September 20th, 2005 and must submit a
judging philosophy to marquettedebate at gmail.com in Word, PDF, or Plain
Text Format. In the subject heading, please state your team’s name and
the word “preferences” (e.g. Marquette’s Preferences). Judging
preference sheets will be sent out late on Tuesday September 20th, 2005
and must be completed by 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 22nd, 2005, to
come into effect for round 1.

Novice 2-Person: The novice two-person division will offer 5
preliminary rounds on Friday and Saturday and will break to
semi-finals. All rounds will be in the 8-3-5 format with 5 minutes of
prep time. Awards will be presented to elimination round participants
and the top five speakers. Sufficient entries must exist to run this
division — please note interest in a four person division for novice in
lieu of the two person division on the tournament entry form. (Entry
limit: 4 teams per school)

LD: The Lincoln-Douglas debate division will offer 6 preliminary rounds
on Friday and Saturday and will break to quarterfinals. Awards will be
presented to all elimination round participants. (Entry limit: 4 LD
debaters per school)

Public Forum: The Public Forum division will offer 4 rounds of
competition on Friday evening. Awards will be presented to the top
three teams. (Entry limit: 4 teams per school)

V-4/JV/Novice 4-Person: These divisions will consist of three preset
rounds to be offered on Saturday only. All rounds will be in the 8-3-5
format with 5 minutes of prep time. Awards will be presented to the top
three teams and top speakers in each position. (Entry limit: 2 teams
per division)

Note: the open division will be split into sections between first and
second year debaters. All debaters with three or more years of
experience must debate in a varsity division (special circumstances
along with tournament director approval may allow for an exception to
this request).

Note: For 4-Person divisions and Novice 2-Person, the MUHS tournament
will follow all Wisconsin Debate Coaches Association guidelines,
including the novice limited topic areas on this year’s policy
resolution.

Judging Information: Judges must be provided for every four debaters or
fraction thereof in policy and every two debaters or fraction thereof
in LD. Please list V 2 Person and LD judge names on the registration
form. No judges will be available for hire. Teams not covered by judges
will be unable to compete. Every school is responsible for providing a
judge that is qualified to judge for the given division. Please email
the tournament director, andynolan at gmail.com, if there is question
about whether a given judge is qualified to judge in given division.
Each school is committed to provide a judge for one round beyond the
elimination of their team in the Varsity and Novice 2 Person divisions.
Schools in LD have the same one round beyond requirement.

Fees: Fees will be assessed at the following rate:

- $35.00 per 2-person team.
- $25.00 per 4-person team.
- $20.00 per LD debater.

All checks should be made payable to Marquette University High School
Debate.

Note: Entry fees will still be assessed for teams dropped after the
registration deadline.

Food: Food and beverages will be sold for only modest profits.
Hospitality for coaches and judges will be provided throughout both
days of the tournament.
