THE ROAD GOES ON FOREVER AND INSTITUTES NEVER END

Lexington, KY, July 13, 2005

GOOD EVENING MR. AND MRS. NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA AND ALL SHIPS AT
SEA, LET'S GO TO PRESS.

In the fourth and final Fellows debate of the forty-fifth annual Kentucky
National High School Debate Institute, Fellows Mima Lazarevic, Glenbrook
South, IL, and Chen Ni, Chattahoochee, GA, defended the affirmative and
Fellows Billy Smelko, St. Augustine, CA and Jack Ewing, Bishop Guertin, NH,
defended the negative. Following the debate instructor Spencer Diamond,
University of Georgie, filed this report:

³In the fourth Fellows debate, Fellows Mima Lazarevic and Chen Ni affirmed
while
Fellows Billy Smelko and Jack Ewing negated.

The 1AC, given by Mima ³More Ev² Lazarevic, argued that Congress should give
all detainees labeled as enemy combatants prisoner of war status under the
Geneva Convention in order to strengthen the United States¹ ability to lead
the
world multilaterally and to prevent future terrorists attacks.

Billy ³Scooter² Smelko responded in the 1NC with a Plan Flaw argument, T-its
(get it?), a critique of the law Agambenstyle, the Courts CP, a Fannie Mae
Politics
DA, and arguments against both advantages such as ³The Aff doesn¹t highlight
enough of the Khalilzhad card.²

In the 2AC, Chen ³Do You Understand The Words That Are Coming Out Of My
Mouth² Ni filled his speech with such gems as the Politics DA is not
intrinsic and
a chart that says there have been multiple recessions without complete
economic collapse. He also spent so much time defending his highlighting of
the Khalilzhad card that there was a noticable lack of o-face on the Courts
CP.
This would ultimately prove to be devastating.

Jack ³SMS² Warden Ewing shocked the crowd in his 2NC when he decided to muck
his
hippie garbage and debate both advantages and the Courts CP. This speech
was pretty legit but certainly not the Truth.

Unfortunately, Smelko¹s 1NR on the Politics DA was merely dece. Infact, to
answer the 2AC money argument that the Politics DA is illegitimate, Scooter
made a counter interpretation that the Neg should only be able to read
Backlash
DA¹s and not Political Capital DAs. However, within only 10 seconds, Young
William proceeded to read a political capital link to plan. Luckily for
Scooter, the
Aff would fail to mention this fact in the debate, and the chart would be
featured
prominently in both the 1AR and 2AR.

Mima¹s 1AR would be the closest speech in the debate to receiving Robert
Horry
status. When things looked rough she was able to deliver a clutch speech
just
when her team needed it the most. But would this be enough?

In the 2NR, Ewing decided to go for the Courts CP that solved the case
better,
the Politics DA, and defense on both advantages. In a last ditch effort,
Ni¹s 2AR
attempted to stress why the Courts did not solve their multilateralism
advantage
and the fact that Politics DAs are cheating.

In the end, the Negative team crushed by a whole lot to a little, with Top
Shelf
also receiving 3 votes.²

Sincerely,
JW Patterson
Kentucky Institute Director
