Just to let everyone know, the 2005 UTNIF still has some openings! This
summer we promise that EVERY student will receive AT LEAST four affirmatives
and full negative strategies against these affirmatives on the FIRST DAY!
Heres just a taste of what our staff is working on:

STARTER-PACK AFFIRMATIVES, WITH 2AC BLOCKS AND CASE EXTENSIONS:
Extraordinary Rendition
Right now, the United States flagrantly abuses international legal standards
through the standard practice of shipping suspected terrorists to aircraft
carriers in the middle of the ocean, or to nations like Saudi Arabia.
Anyone lucky enough to receive one of these all-expense paid trips can also
expect the following amenities:
- Interrogation (The repeated whipping of hands with two-inch-thick
electrical cables)
- Grave-esque living quarters (underground cells)
- Mishandling of holy artifacts
- Human Rights abuses
This is a violation of the basic civil right protecting civilians from
detention without charge. It must be stopped.
Advantages: International Law Credibility, U.S. Soft Power, Battlefield
Intelligence, Human Rights
Racial Profiling
It happens. In clear violation of both 4th and 14th amendment
constitutional protections, individuals are often stopped and searched
without any probable cause
unless, of course, you consider somebodys race
to be probable cause to assume that that person is a criminal.
This affirmative issues the following challenges:
- What is it about race that justifies excessive police action?
- What are the historical, structural conditions for racism?
- How are these conditions produced and sustained through law enforcement?
- What possible avenues for resistance to these conditions can we hope to
find in the law?
This is a critical affirmative, chock full of long, pithy cards and immense
historical analysis. After only a week in its company, your entire
perspective on the history of race politics and race policing in America
will change.
Big Stickin Guantanamo Bay
The Guantanamo Aff will have "big-stick" leadership and War on Terror
advantages stemming from
international backlash against the United States' mistreatment of uncharged
detainees at the Guantanamo
Bay facility in Cuba. By having the President issue an Executive Order
declaring that the detention of
prisoners without charge violates the Geneva Convention, the United States
will be able to gain
support from countries in the Middle East and Europe that are currently
reluctant to provide intelligence
and basing capabilities to the U.S. The impacts are a spillover of declining
U.S. leadership in foreign
policy (Khalizhad anyone?) and nuclear/biological/chemical terrorism.
STARTER PACK NEGATIVES, WITH 2NC BLOCKS AND EVIDENCE EXTENSIONS
U.S. Hegemony and Hard Power (includes arguments surrounding imperial
overstretch, isolationism, unilateralism and the Bush agenda). What could
be more relevant, given current U.S. foreign policy interests?
Courts Counterplan with activism and politics and roll-back net benefits.
Judicial appointments are the most explosive events to hit Congress since
the Clinton impeachment, and the courts are sure to occupy much of your time
throughout the year. Against the Guantanamo Bay affirmative, our
starter-pack will include a counterplan to have the Supreme Court enforce
the plan with net-benefits claiming that presidential action increases
diplomatic capital which will be spent on other bad foreign policies such as
the push for a Palestinian state.
Castro DA. Against the Guantanamo Bay affirmative, there will be a
case-specific disadvantage arguing that the plan is a concession to Cuba
which leads to increasing Castro's influence in South America and a
subsequent backlash against U.S. influence.
Case debate! Solvency turns for international law, battlefield
intelligence, the War on Terror and human rights. Learn the crucial ins and
outs of deep, technical case debates, improve your speaker points overnight,
and understand the topic through and through.
Critical Race Kritik. We will explore a counter-memory of race politics
in America, opposing the call to redeem the very institutions responsible
for the long-term sustainability of racism. Redemption is a myth, and anger
is a gift. Revolution is the only solution. It all rhymes.
And more! We are working hard to produce the most comprehensive,
high-quality and entertaining selection of starter pack evidence anywhere in
the nation. You will surely take advantage of these arguments and more all
year long.
